Sea Otter

Enhydra lutris

The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is a charismatic marine mammal known for its playful behavior and remarkable adaptations to aquatic life. Native to the coastal waters of the North Pacific Ocean, ranging from northern Japan to the central California coast, sea otters play a crucial role in their ecosystem as a keystone species. They primarily inhabit kelp forests, rocky shores, and sometimes estuarine environments. Adult sea otters typically measure about 4 feet in length and weigh between 50 to 100 pounds, with males being somewhat larger than females. Their dense, water-repellent fur is the thickest in the animal kingdom, featuring up to a million hair follicles per square inch, which provides essential insulation in cold waters. Renowned for their intellect and dexterity, sea otters use tools, such as rocks, to crack open shellfish—a primary component of their diet, which also includes sea urchins, crabs, and various mollusks. This predation helps maintain the balance of kelp forest ecosystems by controlling sea urchin populations that, if left unchecked, can devastate kelp beds. Social animals, sea otters often rest and forage in groups known as rafts, which can number from a few individuals to several dozen. Their playful nature and endearing habits, such as holding hands to prevent drifting apart while resting, have captured the fascination of humans worldwide. Despite these charming characteristics, sea otters face threats from oil spills, environmental pollution, and habitat loss, making conservation efforts critical for their survival.
