Scottish Red
Scottish red deer are the red deer of Scotland's Highlands, islands, and managed estates, commonly treated as a regional type of Cervus elaphus rather than a standardized livestock breed. Compared with many lowland or farmed red deer, they are usually leaner and hardier, shaped by exposed hills, rough grazing, and seasonal forage. Coats range from light red-brown in summer to gray-brown in winter; stags carry antlers that vary widely with age, genetics, and nutrition.
Management in Scotland is closely tied to habitat, public access, woodland regeneration, and sporting stalking. Estates and deer management groups set cull plans to keep populations in balance with grazing resources, while farms and parks that keep Scottish red need strong fencing and quiet handling systems. During the rut, mature stags require extra space and caution. Where conservation is the goal, managers may avoid crossing them with larger park or imported lines and keep clear records of herd origin.
