Unknown Strain
Unknown strain pangasius describes Pangasianodon hypophthalmus kept or traded without reliable information on its breeding source. It may be a standard silver iridescent shark, a food-production swai from mixed broodstock, or a color-selected animal such as albino, gold, leucistic, piebald, or melanistic. Because pangasius are widely farmed in Southeast Asia and also sold as juveniles for aquariums, strain identity is often lost during export, resale, rescue, or movement between ponds.
Care and management should assume the full adult needs of the species rather than the small size at purchase. These catfish require warm, clean, well-oxygenated water, roomy quarters, and companions of similar size to reduce stress. For farms, unknown-strain fish should be grown out and assessed before inclusion in broodstock, since uniformity and performance may be unpredictable. For hobbyists, early placement in a genuinely large system is usually the responsible plan.
