Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain pangasius is a Pangasianodon hypophthalmus whose farm, hatchery, color line, or breeding program has not been identified. In the trade, these fish may arrive as generic iridescent sharks, swai, or pangasius catfish, especially when batches include ordinary silver-gray juveniles alongside albino or pale individuals. Strain names in this species are less standardized than in many ornamental fishes, and appearance alone rarely proves a production line or genetic background.
The practical issue is scale. Pangasius are fast-growing, warm-water, schooling catfish that can reach large food-fish size, so small retail specimens should not be bought for ordinary community tanks. Aquaculture facilities and public displays need strong filtration, dissolved oxygen, gentle netting or crowding methods, and secure containment. When a strain is unclassified, managers should keep source records, quarantine new shipments, and evaluate performance before using the fish in breeding or grow-out programs.
