Mixed Strain
Mixed strain pangasius refers to Pangasianodon hypophthalmus with blended or undocumented line ancestry from aquaculture, ornamental, or color-selected stocks. The species is also sold as iridescent shark, sutchi catfish, and swai, though it is a true catfish from the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems rather than a shark. Juveniles are sleek, silver-gray schooling fish with long barbels and dark fins; farm and aquarium strains may include albino, leucistic, melanistic, piebald, gold, or mottled forms. Mixed strain is a management description, not a separate species.
This fish becomes far too large and active for most home aquariums, so long-term keeping belongs in public aquariums, very large private systems, or warm commercial ponds and recirculating farms. Pangasius need high water quality, oxygen, space to school, and handling that reduces panic and skin damage. Farms track strain because growth rate, feed conversion, and harvest traits can vary. Any unwanted stock should be rehomed or culled responsibly, never released.
