Unknown Breed
An unknown breed gerbil is typically a domestic Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, whose exact color variety, parentage, or breeder line was not recorded. The label is common in rescues, shelters, classroom pet histories, and casual rehoming situations. It should not be taken to mean the animal is a different wild gerbil species unless there is clear evidence; most pet gerbils have the same compact body, furry tail tuft, strong hind legs, and desert-adapted digging behavior. Coat colors can include black, golden, grey, Burmese, spotted, pied, Himalayan-type, or mixed patterns.
For adopters, the useful questions are practical: is the gerbil correctly sexed, socially compatible, active, and free from obvious dental or respiratory problems? Unknown animals are usually best managed as pets rather than breeding stock, since age, relatedness, and inherited color genes may be unclear. A quiet quarantine period helps when bringing one into a home or rescue room, and introductions to a new companion should be slow, commonly using a split enclosure. The breed label matters far less than safe housing, deep bedding, and patient handling.
