Unknown Variety
An unknown-variety freshwater angelfish is a domestic Pterophyllum scalare whose color strain or fin background is not known. The fish may look like a familiar type, such as silver, black, koi, marble, gold, half black or platinum, but angelfish often carry hidden genes that do not show in one generation. This label is common for rescues, surrendered fish, mixed dealer batches, juveniles, and aquarium-bred angelfish sold without parental information.
Practical care is no different from a named variety: a tall heated tank, steady water quality, gentle flow and peaceful companions that will not harass the fins. Unknown-variety angelfish can still be healthy, personable aquarium fish, and many become attentive parents. For planned breeding, the missing background means colors and fin types in the fry should be considered experimental. Keeping notes on pairings and culling only for health and structure, not surprise coloration, helps prevent weak or misleadingly labeled lines.
