Crossbred
A crossbred dwarf hamster is a pet hamster with mixed or uncertain ancestry, most often involving Campbell's dwarf hamsters and winter white dwarf hamsters in the Russian dwarf pet trade. These hybrids can look agouti, pearl, mottled, argente, black, or many intermediate colors, and appearance alone rarely identifies the background. The label should not be applied to Chinese hamsters, which are a separate species, or to Syrian hamsters, which cannot be bred with dwarf hamsters.
Care is usually the same as for other small dwarf hamsters, but health and temperament can be less predictable when ancestry is unknown. A roomy enclosure, deep bedding, a solid wheel, sand bath, and a low-sugar diet are sensible starting points, especially when Campbell's ancestry may carry diabetes risk. Most pet keepers are better off housing crossbred dwarfs singly to prevent fighting. Breeding them is generally discouraged unless a knowledgeable breeder understands the lines and is prepared to place offspring responsibly.
