Roborovski
The Roborovski dwarf hamster, or Robo, is the smallest commonly kept dwarf hamster and is usually treated as a distinct species, Phodopus roborovskii, rather than a Campbell's dwarf hamster breed. Native to sandy steppe and semi-desert areas of Mongolia, northern China, and nearby regions, it has a compact body, very short tail, white eyebrow patches, and a quick, skittering movement. The classic coat is sandy agouti with a pale belly, while pet lines may include white face, husky, head spot, mottled, platinum, or white spotted patterns.
Robos are kept mainly as active display pets because many dislike being held and can vanish through small gaps. A roomy, escape-resistant enclosure with deep bedding, a large solid wheel, sand bath, and scattered food suits their constant foraging. Same-sex littermates sometimes live together, but fighting can start at maturity, so many keepers separate them. Breeding requires careful pairing and quiet nest conditions; buyers should check that the animal is a true Roborovski rather than a generic dwarf hamster mix.
