Cairn Terrier
The Cairn Terrier is a small, robust dog breed known for its curiosity, independence, and spirited nature. Originating from the rugged Scottish Highlands, this breed was initially developed for hunting vermin among the cairns, or rock piles, of Scotland. With a sturdy, weather-resistant double coat consisting of a soft undercoat and a rough, tousled outer coat, the Cairn Terrier is well-equipped for outdoor adventures.
Typically weighing between 13 to 18 pounds and standing about 9 to 10 inches tall at the shoulder, these compact terriers are deceptively strong and agile. Their expressive faces, complete with bushy eyebrows and keen, dark eyes, give them a charming and intelligent appearance. Cairn Terriers come in a variety of colors including wheaten, red, gray, and brindle, but they should always retain a warm glow from their underlying brindling.
Known for their tenacity and lively spirit, Cairn Terriers require regular physical and mental stimulation. They are highly intelligent and respond well to training, though their independent streak might mean they sometimes have their own ideas. This breed is often described as fearless but not aggressive, making them excellent watchdogs and loyal family companions. Due to their history as working terriers, they can exhibit a natural prey drive, which may require training to manage around smaller animals.
