Unknown Breed
Unknown breed is a record label for a cockatiel whose variety, mutation background, or breeder line has not been identified. Cockatiels are Nymphicus hollandicus, a small Australian parrot species, and domestic birds are better described by color mutations than by separate breeds. An unknown-breed bird may be a normal grey, pied, pearl, lutino, cinnamon, or a mixed-looking combination, especially after juvenile plumage or incomplete records obscure the original pairing.
For adopters, rescues, and veterinarians, the label mainly signals that assumptions should be avoided. Age, sex, behavior, diet history, wing condition, and previous illness are more useful than guessing a variety from photos. Standard cockatiel care still applies: social housing or daily interaction, safe perches and toys, flight opportunity, and a diet broader than dry seed. Breeding an unknown-background bird is best approached cautiously because hidden mutation genes and relatedness can surprise even experienced keepers.
