Mixed Breed

In cockatiels, mixed breed is an informal label for a pet bird whose color ancestry, breeder line, or show variety is mixed or undocumented. The cockatiel is a single parrot species, Nymphicus hollandicus, so the term usually does not mean a separate breed in the way it would for dogs or livestock. A mixed-breed bird may be normal grey, lutino, pied, cinnamon, pearl, or a combination that makes visual identification difficult.

Choosing or rehoming one is mostly an assessment of the individual bird. Clear eyes, clean nares, smooth breathing, good feather condition, and a stable weight tell more than a variety name. These birds need daily company, chewable enrichment, and a diet that does not rely only on seed. If breeding is considered, a mixed background can hide mutation genes and relatedness, so conservative pairing and good records help prevent weak chicks and misleading color claims.
