Japan Hoso Canary
The Japan Hoso canary, often called the Japanese Hoso, is a small posture canary developed in Japan from European posture stock, with Scotch Fancy influence noted in many accounts. The word hoso refers to slenderness, and the breed is recognized for its narrow body, fine shoulders, small head, and curved crescent posture when shown. Clear yellow, clear white, and variegated yellow or white birds are seen. Its appeal is in outline and stance rather than in a powerful song or unusual color.
Care should support an active, lightweight bird without confusing slim type with poor condition. A healthy Japan Hoso should be bright, well-feathered, and steady on the perch, not weak or underfed. Show breeders use cage setup and perch placement to encourage the correct posture while still allowing exercise. Breeding selections favor flexible carriage, good fertility, and fine but resilient feathering. As pets, they need the same clean environment, bathing, varied canary diet, and protection from drafts as other domestic canaries, with extra caution during handling because of their small frame.
