Border Canary
The border canary, or Border Fancy, is a type canary developed around the border region of northern England and southern Scotland. Rather than being bred primarily for song, it is selected for a compact rounded body, smooth feathering, alert stance, and a neat head carried on a short neck. It descends from the domestic canary, Serinus canaria, and appears in clear yellow, buff, green, cinnamon, blue, and variegated forms depending on the line and show rules.
Border canaries are popular with exhibitors because small differences in outline, feather texture, and carriage matter. Breeding pairs are often planned to balance intense and buff feathering, since overly soft feather can spoil the clean shape. At home they need more flight space than their tidy size suggests, plus steady light cycles, bathing water, and a varied canary diet during breeding and molt. Buyers should look for active birds with smooth plumage and a balanced shape, not just a bright color.
