Exhibition

An exhibition budgerigar is a Melopsittacus undulatus bred and prepared for the show bench rather than classified only by color. In many countries the term overlaps with English budgerigar, but it can also mean any bird entered under local society standards for size, deportment, head, mask, wing carriage, and condition. These budgies are typically larger and more heavily feathered than wild-type or small companion lines, and they may display a wide range of recognized colors and mutations.

Exhibition management includes ordinary budgie husbandry plus conditioning for judging: clean flights, steady handling, suitable diet before breeding, and protection from mites or broken feathers during transport. Serious fanciers keep pedigrees because pair choices affect both visible traits and hidden recessives. For pet buyers, a show-bred bird is still a social parrot that needs exercise and mental activity; the best candidates are bright, responsive birds with clear eyes, clean vents, and enough athletic ability to move around comfortably.
