Unknown Strain
An unknown-strain blue tilapia is Oreochromis aureus whose strain history is missing or undocumented. The fish may look like standard blue tilapia, with a compressed cichlid body, bluish gray sides, and stronger coloration in mature males, but appearance alone rarely identifies a hatchery line. Unknown-strain records are common in small farm, aquaponic, and mixed-source stock where fish have changed hands without detailed breeding notes.
For buyers and managers, unknown strain should be treated as a practical warning rather than a defect. These fish may still be suitable for grow-out, but their growth rate, temperature tolerance, and breeding tendency should be tested under the actual system conditions. They are not the best choice for projects that require known genetic background or repeatable research results. As with other tilapia, warm clean water, adequate oxygen, and secure containment are central concerns, and local rules may limit possession or outdoor culture.
