Unclassified Strain
An unclassified-strain blue tilapia is a blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, that has not been assigned to a named hatchery strain, selective breeding program, or research line. It may be a wild-type population, a long-kept farm line, or fish descended from several sources. The species is a deep-bodied tilapia with variable blue-gray, greenish, or darker breeding colors, and captive stocks may also include pale, gold, mottled, or albino individuals.
This label is useful when the fish are being tracked for production or husbandry but their strain identity is not dependable enough to claim. Growers and researchers should evaluate an unclassified lot on its observed traits: feed conversion, cold tolerance, disease history, harvest size, and reproductive behavior. For breeding, keeping lots separate until their performance is known helps avoid losing useful information. In outdoor culture, permits and escape prevention need attention, especially in regions where tilapia introductions are restricted.
