Mixed Strain

A mixed-strain blue tilapia is Oreochromis aureus stock that comes from more than one hatchery line, farm population, or poorly separated breeding group. Blue tilapia are cichlids native to parts of Africa and the Middle East and are widely used in aquaculture because they grow well in warm water and tolerate somewhat cooler conditions than many tropical tilapias. Mixed strains may show ordinary gray-blue coloration, darker bars, pale or gold variants, or mottled domestic colors depending on the fish used to found the population.

In ponds, recirculating systems, and aquaponics, mixed-strain fish can be useful production stock, but performance may be less predictable than a documented selected line. Farmers should watch growth rate, sex ratio, maturity age, and survival under local temperatures before keeping broodfish. Blue tilapia can breed readily by mouthbrooding, so unwanted reproduction is common if sexes are not managed. Secure containment and biosecurity are important because tilapias may become invasive where they escape into suitable waterways.
