Marble

Marble betta fish are domestic Betta splendens selected for shifting patches of color rather than a fixed solid or bicolor pattern. A marble may start as pale cellophane, blue, red, black, or mixed and then develop new blocks, speckles, or contrast over weeks or months. The trait is associated with unstable pigment expression, so the same fish may look different in seller photos, at purchase, and at maturity. Marble patterns appear across many fin forms, from plakats to halfmoons and crowntails.

In the aquarium, marble bettas are managed like other domestic bettas: warm water, gentle filtration, a covered tank, and careful introductions to any tankmates. Their changing appearance is normal and usually not a sign of illness, although sudden color loss should still be read alongside appetite, behavior, and water quality. Breeding marble lines rewards patience because pairings can produce solids, marbles, koi-like fish, and unexpected colors. Anyone buying for a specific pattern should know that stability is never guaranteed.
