Leatherback

Leatherback bearded dragons are a scale morph of Pogona vitticeps with reduced dorsal scalation and smaller back spikes than a normal bearded dragon. The smoother back can make yellow, orange, red, and hypo colors appear brighter because fewer raised scales break up the surface. Side spikes and beard spines remain, so a leatherback is not scaleless. The trait is usually described as incomplete dominant: a visual leatherback has one copy, while two copies produce the much more delicate silkback form.

For day-to-day keeping, leatherbacks use the same desert-style setup as other bearded dragons, including high-quality UVB, a basking zone, dry retreat areas, and a diet that changes with age. Their smoother skin still sheds normally, but rough decor and retained shed should be watched. Breeding decisions deserve extra care because leatherback-to-leatherback pairings can produce silkbacks, which have special skin and welfare concerns. Buyers should ask what pairing produced the animal and choose bright, active dragons with good body condition rather than selecting only for a smooth back.
