Hypo
A hypo bearded dragon is a hypomelanistic morph of the central bearded dragon, Pogona vitticeps. The mutation reduces dark pigment, giving many animals a lighter background, cleaner color, softer patterning, and clear or near-clear nails instead of dark claws. Hypo can occur in yellow, orange, red, white, normal, leatherback, Dunner, and other lines. The reduced melanin often makes citrus or red line-bred color stand out more, which is why the morph is frequently combined with other projects. Because the trait is recessive, dragons that carry one copy may look normal and are often described as het hypo in breeding records.
Hypo dragons need the same heat, UVB, diet, and enclosure standards as any other bearded dragon; pale skin is not a reason to weaken lighting. For breeding, confirmed genetics matter because visual appearance alone can be misleading, especially in light-colored non-hypo dragons. Pairing two visual hypos produces visual hypo offspring, while other pairings depend on carrier status. Buyers should check that the clear nails match the claimed morph and still judge the animal by weight, alertness, clean eyes, straight limbs, and a good feeding response.
