Grade
A grade alpaca is an alpaca without full registration, complete pedigree, or accepted breed documentation in the registry being used. The animal may still be healthy, productive, and valuable for fiber, companionship, vegetation management, or nonregistered breeding, but its ancestry is not documented to the standard required for registered stock. Grade alpacas can be Huacaya-like, Suri-like, crossbred, or uncertain in type.
For owners, the grade label mainly affects breeding value, show eligibility, and resale expectations. Care remains practical: herd companionship, secure fencing, shearing, hoof and dental attention, parasite control, and a diet based on forage with appropriate minerals. Fiber testing can help describe a grade alpaca more fairly than pedigree language. Sellers should be direct about registration status so buyers know whether they are purchasing breeding stock, a fiber animal, or a companion.
