Zula's Shih Tzu of Maine got its start in Augusta, Maine in 2012, when owner Aminah Sadruddin acquired her first shih tzu — a black and white female named Zula Mae — whose striking looks drew so much attention that a small in-home breeding program grew from there. Augusta sits in central Maine, about 55 miles north of Portland, and families across the region have found their way to this program for AKC shih tzu puppies in Maine.

Aminah built her approach around health testing from the beginning. All adult dogs are Embark tested and cleared, and any dog that does not pass testing is not used in breeding. The goal is to reduce the presence of inheritable conditions in each successive generation, and every puppy goes home with a one-year congenital health guarantee.

Puppies are raised inside the home alongside the family, including resident cats, and are handled daily from birth to encourage socialization. Before going to their new homes, each pup receives a vet check and clearance, a first round of vaccinations, and deworming. The program also aims to produce dogs suited to family life and therapy work. Aminah makes herself available to new owners for the lifetime of the dog, and any shih tzu from the program that can no longer stay with its family must be returned to her rather than rehomed independently or surrendered to a shelter.
