Witte Shorthorns

Witte Shorthorns is a heritage Shorthorn cattle breeder in Fallon, Nevada, in the high desert near Reno. All cattle are pedigree registered and undergo routine veterinary exams, hoof trimming, and tailored nutrition plans. Foundation stock derives from bloodlines selected for longevity and maternal instincts, with several lineages traced back to traditional English herds.

Herd health protocols include annual testing for bovine viral diarrhea and Johne’s disease plus vaccination schedules overseen by a local veterinarian. Animals graze on open pasture rotating through native grassland with access to fresh spring water, which supports hoof health and natural foraging behavior. During winter months, cows receive supplemental alfalfa hay and grain mixes to maintain condition and support calving in cold weather.

Calves are gently handled from birth to build calm temperaments, ease transitions to new settings, and encourage healthy growth. A family-run operation gives each animal individual attention from the first nursing through grow-out under careful watch.
