Wickwire Angus

Wickwire Angus raises purebred black Angus cattle in Bull Creek, in the mountains of western North Carolina, not far from Asheville. The operation belongs to David Freeman, who established his Wickwire herd in 1965 and built the program around Wye-derived genetics — a lineage developed at Maryland's Wye Plantation and long recognized for the consistency and performance of its animals.

Freeman's connection to that genetic tradition runs deep. During the years he worked in Northern Virginia, he spent considerable time alongside Jim Lingle and Jim Reid, two stockmen closely tied to the Wye program, and shaped his own approach to selection around what he learned from them. The herd grew to over 100 females, with a focus on producing breeding bulls for commercial cattlemen. Freeman has sold black Angus cattle for sale to buyers across more than 30 states.

A hallmark of the Wickwire program is the emphasis on productive longevity. Freeman prefers to calve heifers for the first time at 28 to 30 months, allowing animals to mature fully before entering the breeding cycle. The target standard — cows that wean four tons of calf over their lifetimes — mirrors a benchmark set by Lingle himself and reflects the program's long view on herd productivity and uniformity.
