Westhaven Longhorn Ranch

Westhaven Longhorn Ranch has been raising registered Texas longhorns in Ione, California since 1973, making it one of the longer-running Texas longhorn operations in the state. The ranch sits in Amador County, in the Sierra Nevada foothills roughly an hour southeast of Sacramento.

Sondra West-Moore, who took over the operation after her father's passing in 2015, carries forward a program he built on the breed's natural strengths — strong maternal instincts, the ability to calve without assistance, and a calm temperament when handled with patience and respect. Sondra moves her cattle through trust rather than force, a practice that reflects the ranch's broader low-stress handling philosophy.

The herd grazes on open California grass pastures, and the ranch's registered stock spans bulls, heifers, cow-calf pairs, and beef animals. Westhaven is a member of both the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America and the California Association of Texas Longhorn Breeders, and ranch-bred animals have appeared in the TLBAA Dam of Merit program.
