University Of Wyoming, Hereford cattle, Laramie, WY, is part of the college’s long-standing beef program on its research farm in Albany County near Cheyenne. The herd is registered with the American Hereford Association and undergoes routine health screenings alongside performance testing for weight gain and feed efficiency and follows recommended vaccination schedules. Since the late 1960s the program has supported faculty-led studies on maternal traits and contributed data to national breed performance databases.

Animals graze on more than 200 acres of open pastures that rotate seasonally to maintain forage quality and herd health. Covered feeding areas and winter feeding protocols ensure comfort through cold months while social groups are managed for natural herd cohesion. Hands-on student involvement at every stage of care fosters attentive husbandry, a deep respect for the animals, and enhances learning outcomes.

The cattle occasionally feature in campus outreach events that explore sustainable agriculture and regional food systems.
