Ulrich Suffolks
Ulrich Suffolks has been raising registered Suffolk sheep in Eureka, Illinois since 1976, making it one of the longer-standing Suffolk programs in central Illinois, not far from Peoria. Steve Ulrich runs the operation with a focus on what he describes as a complete, functional sheep — prioritizing easy fleshing, milking ability, longevity, and structural correctness over any single trait.
The breeding program has drawn on well-regarded genetics over the decades. In the 1990s, the flock incorporated rams from the Tom Slack program in Indiana to build level tops, high docks, and strong muscling. Around 2000, a ewe lamb crop from Randy Wilts was added to increase frame, bringing in bloodlines rich in BYU breeding. The operation has also worked with genetics from Buckeye Acres, George Brothers, Peifers, and Bob Kimm.
Each fall, roughly 100 ewes are bred, with the flock consistently producing lamb crops at or above 200%. The program serves a broad range of buyers, from 4-H families to producers looking to improve their breeding flocks to commercial ram buyers seeking Suffolk sheep for sale in Illinois.
