Symens Bros Limousin
Symens Bros Limousin has been raising purebred limousin cattle near Amherst, South Dakota, in the northeast corner of the state, since the early 1970s. John M. Symens oversees the operation, which sits roughly 50 miles northeast of Aberdeen and traces its roots on the same Marshall County ground back to 1917, when patriarch Harm Symens first settled there.
The family got into the limousin breed because they were feeding their own cattle and recognized limousin as a carcass-focused breed that delivered superior muscling. Their first purebred limousin bull was purchased from Canada in 1973, and the seedstock program has been built around that foundation ever since. Today the operation carries a purebred herd of around 275 head, with genetics marketed under the SYES brand.
Symens Brothers holds an annual production sale and selects cattle with an eye toward calving ease, performance, muscling, and the homozygous polled trait. The family has long been active in breed governance, including service on the South Dakota Limousin Association board and the North American Limousin Foundation. Buyers looking for limousin bulls or females in South Dakota will find a multi-generational program with deep ties to the state's beef industry.
