Southern Cattle Company

Southern Cattle Company has been raising cattle in Marianna, Florida since 1992, when founder John E. Downs purchased the original 400-acre property along Highway 231 and began building what would become an expansive seedstock operation. Over the decades, the ranch has grown to nearly 10,000 acres throughout the region, placing it among the larger cattle programs in the Florida Panhandle, roughly an hour west of Tallahassee.

Brahman cattle are part of a multi-breed lineup that also includes Angus, Brangus, SimAngus, and Charolais, among other breeds. A core focus of the program is producing bulls and females that are genuinely adapted to the climate and forage conditions of the Deep South — an emphasis that sets regionally raised Brahman and Brahman-influenced cattle apart from genetics imported from drier or cooler parts of the country. The operation pairs that adaptability focus with feed efficiency research and carcass data to support the profitability of commercial cattlemen who source from the ranch.

Southern Cattle Company is also equipped to process and ship semen and embryos, extending its genetic offerings well beyond the Florida Panhandle to ranches across the country.
