Silver Cuff Farm

Silver Cuff Farm raises yak in Stockton, New Jersey, situated in Hunterdon County near the Delaware River and roughly an hour southwest of New York City. Eric and Susan Mandatta started researching the breed in 2013, building out their infrastructure before bringing home their foundation heifers and eventually finding a bull whose pedigree traces to well-regarded bloodlines originating in Montana.

The farm's herd includes Imperial and Imperial Trim animals, and variety in markings, nose color, and coat length has been a deliberate priority from the start. Each spring, Silver Cuff hosts what the Mandattas call "Spa Days," hand-combing the down undercoats to keep the animals comfortable through warmer months and to deepen the bond between herd and handlers. Fiber fineness is tested annually by an outside lab, with the herd's harvest consistently averaging below 22 microns. The down is sold raw to spinners through local yarn shops and is also sent to a mill for processing into yarn and other products. Yak milk soaps are an additional farm product.

With over 20 calves born and raised by the yak cows without intervention, the herd's reproductive record reflects the low-maintenance nature of the animals on the farm's smaller acreage.
