Running Creek Ranch

Running Creek Ranch has been raising Limousin cattle on the high plains of Elizabeth, Colorado, southeast of Denver, since Joe Freund Sr. purchased the land in 1970 and committed the herd exclusively to Limousin in 1979. Joey Freund, the second generation to manage the operation, now runs the ranch alongside his family, including son Ethan, who works the herd full time, making it a true multi-generational program rooted in Elbert County.

The ranch carries roughly 1,250 bred mature cows and 425 yearling heifers across approximately 34,000 deeded and leased acres, with a spring-calving program that synchronizes and AI-breeds between 1,150 and 1,200 females each year. Limousin cattle for sale in Colorado from this program are bred with a commercial focus, with bulls sold primarily by private treaty to cow-calf producers — a noteworthy share of whom are repeat customers. Rather than selling yearling bulls at the typical 15 to 18 months, the ranch holds bulls to two years of age so they are mature enough to cover larger cow herds.

Docility, low birthweight, and ease of calving are traits the Freunds have actively selected for over decades, and the herd consistently performs in feedlot carcass data, achieving high Choice quality grades and strong yield grades through an all-natural, GAP-certified finishing program. One of the ranch's most distinctive practices is its use of Belgian draft horses for daily feeding — teams working on voice command haul hay across pastures year-round, a tradition carried on since the ranch's founding. Running Creek also participates in the National Western Stock Show, exhibiting bulls in the pen and carload divisions.
