R. Schlegel & Sons

R. Schlegel & Sons raises registered Hereford cattle in Olney, Texas, about 100 miles northwest of Fort Worth in the rolling rangelands of Young and Archer counties. The operation is run by Buzz and Nell Summerour and carries deep roots in the region — the family descended from German immigrants who first settled this part of north Texas in 1876.

The program traces its registered Hereford lineage back to 1968, when the first registered bull was acquired through the Sears Foundation, and it has grown steadily since. Today the herd consists of more than 60 registered animals, predominantly horned Herefords, grazed on native range across northern Young and southern Archer counties. Both horned and polled lines have been part of the program since its early decades.

Cattle from R. Schlegel & Sons have a notable show record, including the Champion Hereford steer at the State Fair of Texas in 2001 and a Champion Polled Hereford bull at the 2010 Texas State Fair. The breeding focus has remained consistent throughout: producing Hereford cattle for sale in Texas that are moderate-framed, heavily muscled, structurally sound, and efficient, with an emphasis on easy calving and adequate milk production.
