Ayrshire Farm in Upperville, Virginia has been raising Scottish Highland cattle and other rare heritage breeds since its founding in 1996, making it one of the longer-running operations of its kind in the Virginia Piedmont — about an hour west of Washington, D.C., in the heart of Loudoun County horse country.

The farm holds Certified Humane, USDA Organic, and Predator Friendly designations, and was the first farm in Virginia to earn all three. Highland cattle for sale from Ayrshire are raised entirely on pasture across the farm's 800 acres, where the herd rotates regularly to take advantage of nutrient-rich, no-till grasses. Calving for the Highlands is scheduled in the fall, timed to align with the breed's natural hardiness in cooler conditions and the availability of lush autumn forage.

Beyond Highlands, the farm also maintains herds of Ancient White Park and English Longhorn cattle, along with Gloucestershire Old Spot hogs and heritage poultry breeds. The broader mission centers on preserving genetically viable populations of rare and endangered landrace breeds — animals selected to thrive in a pasture environment without the high-input feeds that commercial livestock require.
