Pillards Miniature Cattle

Pillards Miniature Cattle raises Western heritage miniature cattle in Rockwell, Iowa, a small farming community in north-central Iowa roughly an hour north of Mason City. Dustin Pillard started with miniature cattle back in 1993, and the herd has been growing and refining ever since.

The program's core goal is breeding Western heritage cattle that stand under 36 inches tall, with conformation that echoes the cattle of the American frontier — athletic and refined rather than short-legged and beefy. Color variety is a deliberate priority, with the herd carrying spots, speckles, brindles, linebacks, tri-colors, and wild patterns across a wide range of base colors. Cows are selected to be feminine and classic in appearance, while bulls run muscular without being overly heavy.

With a cow herd built over more than 25 years of careful selection, multi-generational cow families are well represented on the farm, with some foundation lines tracing back to animals acquired in the late 1990s. Calves from this program are among the smallest Western heritage miniature cattle for sale in Iowa, with some arriving at under 20 pounds at birth. Animals from Pillards have found their way to buyers across 33 states and Canada.
