Perks Ranch

Perks Ranch has been raising registered Hereford cattle in Rockford, Illinois since 1961, making it one of the longer-running seedstock operations in northern Illinois, not far from the Chicago metro area.

The ranch's registered cowherd has roots stretching back to a 1978 dispersal sale, when 20 foundation females were acquired from the Northern Pump Cattle Co. at McHenry, Illinois. Over the decades, the program has placed a consistent emphasis on selecting top herd sire genetics, including bulls that have gone on to produce regional and national champions, with highlights such as a reserve champion bull at the American Royal and class winners at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

Data collection has long been central to how the herd is managed. Ultrasound measurements and the GEMS herd management platform are used to track breeding, health, embryo transfer, and performance records across the entire cowherd, with an eye toward culling non-producers and identifying consistently top-performing females. The program also maintains an active embryo transfer component, with donor females co-owned alongside other established Hereford operations across the country.

Perks Ranch has been recognized as Illinois Hereford Breeder of the Year and hosts an annual show clinic for junior exhibitors who purchase cattle, covering feeding, fitting, and showmanship in a two-day hands-on format.
