Lays Ranch

Lay's Ranch, run by Norman and Bliss Lays, raises Aberdeen Angus cattle in Rice, Texas, in the area southeast of Dallas. The ranch got its start in 2011 when the family put a few calves on a milk cow for their own table, and word of the homegrown beef spread quickly enough to grow into a full operation.

All steers are born and raised on the ranch rather than purchased at auction age, and the cattle are never confined to a feedlot. Finishing is done with grain supplements brought out to the pasture in feed troughs, so the animals continue to roam on grass throughout the process. The ranch aims to handle cattle calmly and with as little stress as possible, a practice the Lays family ties directly to meat quality.

Bliss holds a bachelor's degree in animal science with a minor in wildlife management, which informs the husbandry side of the program.
