Knolveston Farm

Knolveston Farm raises suri alpacas in Bakersville, North Carolina, tucked into the Black Mountains of Mitchell County, roughly an hour northeast of Asheville. The farm is owned by Richard Bohannon, who brings a deep background in livestock evaluation to his alpaca program — he has bred and shown miniature poodles under the Aery prefix since the early 1990s and holds credentials as an AKC dog show judge.

Richard's focus shifted to suri alpacas after acquiring the farm and immersing himself in the fiber industry. Drawn specifically to the distinctive luster and drape of suri fleece, he made the deliberate choice to build a suri-only program rather than raise huacayas. The farm reports starting with strong foundation genetics and has continued to build from there.

Showing plays a central role in how the program is managed. Richard views the show ring and fleece competitions as a practical evaluation tool, using results to inform breeding decisions and refine the quality of each generation of suri alpacas for sale in North Carolina. The herd includes both females and herdsires, with a number of animals carrying national and futurity show credentials.
