Julia Swartz breeds standard poodles in Monkton, Maryland, a rural community in Baltimore County about 20 miles north of Baltimore. The program, run by Julia and her husband Dave, traces its roots to 2007, when they acquired their foundation dog, Jada, from Luminary Standard Poodles.

The lines at Maryland Standard Poodles are built around conformation champions. Each dog in the program carries multiple champions in its five-generation pedigree, which the Swartzes view as a measure of structural soundness and correct movement. Pairings are made deliberately, with health testing of both parents and a goal of producing standard poodles that are conformationally sound and temperamentally steady.

Litters are limited to roughly one per year, and puppies are home-raised with close attention to all stages of development. They stay with the breeder until ten weeks of age and are microchipped by a veterinarian at nine weeks. The program exclusively produces purebred standard poodles and does not participate in designer crossbreeds. Each puppy goes home AKC-registered with a five-generation pedigree and a contract that includes a limited health guarantee and a spay/neuter agreement for pet placements. The Swartzes remain available to families for the life of the dog.
