JA Cattle

JA Cattle is a Chianina cattle breeder in Maquoketa, IA, serving Jackson County and the Driftless Area near Dubuque. James and Ashley Johnson have raised Chianina cattle for more than ten years and hold memberships in national breed associations. It performs routine genetic and hoof health testing to maintain strong, resilient stock.

Animals live in pasture-based systems with shaded loafing sheds, clean water stations, and access to mineral blocks. Calves are socialized from birth and handled daily to foster calm temperaments and easy adaptation to new environments. The farm originated as a small family dairy and gradually shifted to focus on beef-type cattle known for lean meat and gentle dispositions.

Several of its bulls and heifers have placed at state and county fairs for muscle structure and uniform growth. They employ rotational grazing and native grass pastures to support soil health and sustainable land stewardship.
