Houchin Family Alpacas
Houchin Family Alpacas raises alpacas on a six-acre farm in Heyworth, Illinois, roughly 15 miles south of Bloomington-Normal in central Illinois. Brian and Karley Houchin have been rooted in the alpaca community since purchasing the farm in 2009, starting out with 12 animals and building steadily from there.
The farm takes a hands-on approach to herd health, running its own fecal samples to monitor for parasites, drawing blood when needed, and administering regular shots alongside other husbandry procedures. Brian serves as president of the state alpaca affiliate board, and the farm has volunteered at multiple show levels, including helping organize the IAOBA Railsplitter Show. Those looking for alpacas in Illinois will find a program that also supports new owners with guidance on herd care after purchase. The farm produces retail fiber products from its herd, including socks, sweaters, and teddy bears, as well as raw fleece.
