High Country Critters
High Country Critters raises yaks on a 35-acre ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the pine-covered Black Forest community northeast of the city. Lynda and Mike Gehring have been working with yaks for over 24 years, and their herd is registered with both IYAK and WHYC.
Every animal in the program carries full foundation pedigrees tracing back to the earliest yaks imported into the United States. The current breeding bull, HPY Thor Y052, combines three well-known bloodlines, and the Gehrings' stated goal is to blend the taller frame of their long-running Sherpa line with the stockier, woollier build of Thor's offspring. All calves are DNA tested and IYAK registered before leaving the ranch.
Hands-on socialization is central to how the herd is managed. Calves are imprinted from birth and spend their first week interacting closely with the Gehrings before rejoining the herd, resulting in yaks that are comfortable with daily human contact. For anyone searching for yaks for sale in Colorado, the program's focus on temperament, documented bloodlines, and registered stock reflects a long-standing approach to raising tame, tractable animals.
