Helmcrest Wooden Legs

Helmcrest Wooden Legs raises purebred fainting (myotonic) goats on a 100-acre farm just outside Chesterville, Ontario, about 45 minutes south of Ottawa. Shelley Helmer runs the operation, which began with the farm's first fainting goat and has grown into a registered breeding program for those seeking fainting goat breeders in Ontario.

The farm operates as a closed herd, meaning no outside animals are added to the property without first being quarantined and testing negative for CL, CAE, and Johnes. Kids are handled daily from birth to encourage sociability, fully vaccinated before leaving the farm, and sent home with a health record documenting their care to date.

Helmcrest registers its animals with the International Fainting Goat Association, and new owners receive official certificates by mail once names are submitted. The farm does not place animals singly, requiring buyers to have companion goats, which reflects a straightforward approach to animal welfare that runs through the whole program.
