Heartland Hackney Farm

Heartland Hackney Farm has been raising hackney ponies in New London, Iowa since the 1960s, making it one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the country. The farm spans more than 500 acres in southeast Iowa, not far from Burlington, and its breeding facilities include over 300 acres of pasture, 15 paddocks, and a 30-stall breeding barn equipped with an office, lab, and multipurpose area. Sandra Kolkman and her late husband Darrel built the program over decades, earning the American Hackney Horse Society's Gwen Stapleford Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 for their lifelong contributions to the breed.

The farm's bloodline focus centers on combining Wheatland's Humdinger, Carnation's King, and Dun Haven Bandolier lines to produce ponies that balance conformation with athletic ability. That approach has yielded some of the most decorated hackney ponies in show history, including Heartland Equality, a three-time World Grand Champion who was voted Horse World magazine's World's Peoples Choice Hackney Pony of the Century. The farm regularly competes at the Kentucky State Fair World's Championship, the Midwest Charity Horse Show, and the American Royal in Kansas City.

With more than 400 ponies on the property and a staff dedicated to their daily care, Heartland Hackney Farm stands as one of the largest hackney pony operations in the world.
