Goldens Retreat

Goldens Retreat raises golden retrievers in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, in Lancaster County about 20 minutes from the city of Lancaster. Tim and Cathy Krauter operate the program from a forested property along a creek, where dogs roam through the woods across all four seasons.

The Krauters draw their breeding stock from both American and European champion lines, offering pups in a range of coat colors including cream, golden, and dark red. All adult dogs are evaluated through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for hips, elbows, eyes, and cardiac health, and each dog is also genetically screened through Embark Laboratories, which tests for more than 230 conditions in partnership with Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Pups are raised on a raw whole-food diet and go through a structured eight-week socialization and training program before leaving for new homes. That window covers exposure to people of varying ages, daily individual handling, and foundational boundary work. Cathy's golden retriever Cooper, a former Seeing Eye dog, has also been certified through the Canines for Christ program for community animal-assisted therapy, a reflection of the family's long-standing connection to the breed's role in people's lives.
