Glengorm

Glengorm raises pedigree highland cattle on the Isle of Mull, about four miles northwest of Tobermory on Scotland's Inner Hebrides. Tom Nelson is the second generation of his family to manage the fold at Glengorm Castle, where hefted highland cattle have a long history in this hill-farm setting. The Nelson family established long-term stewardship of the estate in 1970.

The estate is home to a fold of hill-bred pedigree highland cattle listed on Slow Food's Ark of Taste. Life for a highland at Glengorm is genuinely wild — the cattle are left largely to their own devices and only occasionally brought in. Most calves are born on the hill without assistance and are capable of withstanding the weather without needing to be brought indoors.

The fold's stock bulls have competed at the Oban Highland Bull Show, with a son of "Eoin Mhor" taking the supreme champion title at the 123rd running of that event. Bulls bred at Glengorm, such as Ruaridh 2nd of Glengorm, have gone on to sire stock that fetches strong prices at Highland Cattle Society sales. Those looking for highland cattle from a longstanding island fold will find that Glengorm's program is rooted in the rugged moorland and Atlantic coastline of the northern Isle of Mull.
