Firebird Farms

Firebird Farms raises yak in the south-facing hills outside Ashland, Oregon, situated between 4,000 and 5,000 feet in elevation — terrain that suits the animals well. Owner Sophia Weiss started the herd with just a pair of yak and has steadily grown the operation over the years to around 80 animals.

The breeding program prioritizes temperament and personality alongside fiber quality, size, and conformation, with the goal of placing well-suited foundation animals in new homes. Each calf receives individual attention from birth, and many of the yak on the property are notably tame as a result. The farm sits within the Rogue Valley, roughly 15 minutes from Medford, and those looking for yak for sale in Oregon will find a range of breeding stock — bulls, cows, heifers, and calves — representing diverse bloodlines.

The herd grazes on native Oregon grasses and mountain pastures without growth hormones, living what the farm describes as an organic life. Animals that do not meet breeding standards are humanely harvested, rounding out a full-circle approach to land and livestock stewardship.
