Diamond Shorthorns

Diamond Shorthorns raises purebred shorthorn cattle out of Okotoks, Alberta, about 30 minutes south of Calgary. The operation is run by Jaimie and Praveen Chouhan alongside Dan and Jill Stephenson, bringing together two families with deep roots in Canadian shorthorn genetics.

The Stephenson side of the program traces back to 1907, when Jasper Stephenson moved from Northumberland, England to Cayley, Alberta, where his family had long kept shorthorn cattle. Jasper established a purebred shorthorn herd called Newbiggon in 1918, and his son Herb continued the tradition starting in 1964 with the Frimley herd. Several foundation cow families established in those early decades, including descendants of the original Braeside Rosy Dawn, remain represented in the herd today.

The program focuses on purebred shorthorn genetics, offering bulls, semen, and productive females. Selection has emphasized fleshing ability, body depth, udder quality, and consistent performance across generations. Past herd sires have produced offspring shown and sold at major Canadian events including Agribition, and the program has contributed genetics that have reached shorthorn breeders as far as Scotland.
