Cotmore Downs

Cotmore Downs raises traditional Hereford cattle in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, on a property set along a tributary of the Clarence River, close to Lismore and within reach of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Run by Peter Hall and his family, the operation carries a bloodline with roots stretching back to around 1780, when Richard Hall was among the Herefordshire farmers instrumental in establishing the breed. That original Cotmore herd was recorded in Volume 1 of the Hereford Herd Book and is recognised as one of the oldest registered Hereford herds in the world. The lineage was interrupted when Norman Hall emigrated to Australia during the Great Depression in 1929.

In retirement, Peter Hall traced the line back through the traditional Hereford population in England and, in 2013, imported more than 100 embryos descended from the founding herd. The first calves from those embryos were born at Cotmore Downs in 2014, marking the formal restart of the stud. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust of the UK has since invited the program to serve as an insurance population for traditional Hereford genetics, a distinction tied to the breed's endangered status and Australia's freedom from diseases such as Mad Cow and Foot and Mouth.

The property spans just over 140 acres and carries between 30 and 60 breeding females. The registered herd draws exclusively on English bloodlines, with no North American genetics introduced, maintaining the purebred character that defines traditional Herefords for commercial producers seeking hereford cattle in New South Wales with verifiable heritage.
