Copeland & Sons LLC

Copeland & Sons LLC raises registered and commercial Hereford cattle in Nara Visa, New Mexico, a short-grass rangeland in the northeastern corner of the state roughly two hours east of Santa Fe. Jack Dangelmayr carries forward a multi-generational operation that took its current shape when Clifford and Barbara Copeland assumed ranch management in 1959, with a second generation joining in the early 1980s.

The ranch originally ran as a strictly commercial Hereford outfit before expanding into a combined registered and commercial program. Today it also produces F1 black baldy replacement heifers and Maine Anjou cattle, alongside a club calf division. Cattle from this Hereford operation in New Mexico have been exhibited at both local and national shows throughout the program's history, though the selection focus has always centered on range performance rather than show-ring type.

The environment itself does much of the culling work. At roughly 4,500 feet elevation, the ranch sees annual rainfall of around 15 inches in favorable years and temperature swings from over 100 degrees in summer to well below zero in winter. Registered cattle run under the same range conditions as commercial cows, calving unassisted on open pasture with no irrigated ground and minimal supplemental feeding. Fertility is treated as the one non-negotiable trait, with a strict 60-day breeding season and annual culling of open cows. Selection criteria emphasize sound feet, good udder quality, and moderate frame size suited to the demanding climate. Performance records, EPDs, feedlot testing, ultrasound scans, and DNA evaluations are all part of the program's evaluation process.
